Road Trip, Oct 2025

10/14/2025

For me, the joy of photography is seeing earth’s magic, its vitality and order, then sharing it.

My recent road trip continued, a new leg beyond pointy red rocks. I drove north toward Escalante, UT on Highway 12. The name was taken from the Dominguez/Escalante party, 1776, who helped create the crucial Spanish Trail from Santa Fe, NM to Los Angeles, CA..

I passed the Hole In the Rock Road, LDS settlers who travelled east out of Escalante on a mission to settle, past Dance Hall Rock, past Davis Gulch, the last sighting of the ephemeral Everett Ruess, and through the hole in sheer cliffs, down 1200 feet to the Rio Colorado, then 100 miles over to Bluff UT, then on to Blanding UT.

I passed the Devil’s Backbone Road, an old indian trail along Boulder Mountain, then a dangerous mail delivery trail, then in 1930s a narrow CCC-built road.

I stopped at the Head Of The Rocks scenic overlook. Beautiful big sky over white Navajo Sandstone, slick rock, as far as I can see, Canyon Country.

Now I’ll let the images talk.

Next time: Fall foliage wrap-up and then some tiny landscapes.

With year 80 still in my rear view mirror, I continued on my Road Trip. The colors turned from yellow and orange to red, colorado.

I climbed up the Echo Cliffs and looked down to see the Marble Platform and in the distance the Kaibab Plateau. Rio Colorado in Marble Canyon was clawing its way toward the rest of Grand Canyon National Park.

I drove up through Red Canyon, just outside of Bryce Canyon National Park.

I found the slick rock Highway 12, then did a U-turn to see more Bryce Canyon rocks, through high scrub over at Table Cliff Plateau.

These images are what I would call Proper Landscapes, to be distinguished from Rockscapes, More Yellow, and Tiny Landscapes (h/t Mark Whiting), still to come.

For me, high points have been along the way during a road trip: some set-ups, often roadkill, drive, stop, click, drive a little more, repeat, stop, U-turn, stop, drive…finally get somewhere. A kid with a camera in the candy store of lively scenes.

Just last week I got the opportunity to go out again. I headed to PHX for personal business, passing through MT, ID, UT, AZ.  2 days (long) down, 3 days back. I found the candy stores, still with stock.

I give you three images.

Please enjoy. Tell me what you think. I’ll share more in the coming weeks, here and on my website. Watch for them.
